| At the beginning of the sixties, based on the sporting activities of the US parent company that had launched the Shelby Cobras, the GT350-Rs and the GT40, Ford UK developed a similar sports programme. Thus in 1962 the then PR Director Walter Hayes had a meeting with Colin Chapman. Hayes persuaded Chapman to incorporate Lotus engine parts from the Elan into the Cortina. At the beginning of 1963 the renowned 1558 cc four-cylinder racing car was launched. Thanks to its compelling power and ease of handling, the "British answer to the Shelby Mustang" very quickly enjoyed success in races and rallies. So Sir John Whitmore won the 1965 European Touring Car Championship in the red and gold Cortina of the Alan Mann racing team. In every race that John Whitmore's car entered in the 1965 season it came first in its class. The model is based on a reproduction in the Alan Mann 1965 colours.
