| By 2001, that is unusually early, Renault had begun developing the chassis at Enstone and the new 3 litre V10 induction engine RS 23 at Viry-Chƒtillon. At the beginning of the 2003 season they had perfected an 800 bhp car, in which the chassis and engine had been optimally balanced. With some justification therefore Renault had great expectations for a successful season. Thanks to the driving skills of Fernando Alonso, who ended the 2003 season at number six, and the 33 points contributed by the talented Italian driver Jarno Trulli, Renault successfully achieved the 4th rank they had aimed at in the constructors' standings.
