| June 6th 1945: a pivotal day in WWII. The Allies landed on the beaches at Normandy in an operation codename ‘Overlord’ in the biggest military operation the world had ever seen. In preparation for the landings the Allies trained over 3 million men in the south of England. They brought together 5,000 warships and 1,600 merchant ships, as well as overwhelming air supremacy. 156,000 men and 20,000 vehicles landed that day, even though 10,000 men were killed, wounded or went missing. This was the starting point of the Liberation and was a crucial operation that led to the ending of the war in Europe in May 1945.
